How to Avoid ‘Upgrades’ in Automotive Service

So the other day I went to get a simple oil change. They tried to sell me an "upgrade", "green oil", "filters", and more. And they are quite pushy acting like your going to ruin your car if you don't buy these upgrades. When did getting a simple oil change turn into being pressured to buy everything under the sun? I didn't purchase the upgrade. Have you had a similar experience? What do you do in this situation?
