So what ingredients should you look for in an acne product? Here are some helpful tips on what to use and what not to use on your breakouts.

1) Products, Products, Products: Choosing the right product is vitally important.

  • Salicylic Acid is found in a few over-the-counter acne products and helps unclogs pores. Using this product once to twice a day with a face wash will help clear your blackheads. Something else found in over the counter products?
  • Benzyl Peroxide. Although it is used to kill the bacteria, it is not used to unclog pores.
  • Hydrogen peroxide dries and harms skin. Stick to the salicylic acid for the best results.

2) Exfoliate: Exfoliating is very great for your skin because it removes dead skin cells. Be sure to rub on gently to be sure not to harm or scratch your skin.

3) Moisturize: Finding a moisturizer that is oil-free keeps your skin feeling and looking smooth. Dry and flaky skin is common during the winter months. Reapplying moisturizer is important for your face especially after using products that normally dry it out.

4) Remove your makeup: After a long day of wearing makeup make sure to remove it before falling asleep, maybe even as soon as you walk through the door. Your face needs time to breathe.

5) Don’t touch your face: The oils from your fingers will clog up your pores causing more blackheads.

These tips will help you when you’re fishing around for the right product to use on your troubled skin. When all else fails, see your dermatologist.
