It’s been six years since I was in my 20s, but I remember those 10 years incredibly well. I was so sure that I had the answers to everything. I had my life completely mapped out. Or so I thought.

The older I get, the more I realize that there is so much about life that I don’t know. Some of the things I thought I had figured out in my 20s, I still don’t have figured out in my 30s. I guess it’s true that humility comes with age and experience.

Cosmopolitan just released a list of ideas that people in their 20s have that they'll look back on and laugh at when they hit their 30s. Actually, Cosmo calls them ideas that “millennials” have, but in all fairness, I think it’s safe to say that anyone, in any generation who’s ever been in their 20s has had thoughts similar to these.

There's an Age When You Suddenly Become an Adult

This is so not true. There’s no age when the pieces all fit together. They certainly don't for me in my 30s and I'm pretty sure its safe to say that they don't for my grandparents either and they're in their late 70s.  Adulthood is a journey not a destination. It's a constant learning process. Just when you start to find yourself getting a little cocky and think you've got a handle on it, you'll be nailed with a curveball. However, it's completely possible to act like an adult, but still be childlike at heart. My hope is that no matter how old I get, I'll never become so stagnant in life that I forget how to laugh and play pranks and enjoy the small moments.

You're Definitely Going to Change the World

You might. Or, you might not. And if you don’t, you’re not a failure. I think it's sad though that the world has changed so much in such a short amount of time and people, not all, but a lot have gotten cold and ungrateful. You might not change the world in a huge way, but you can change it in a little way through the lives of others. When someone holds a door for you, say "thanks." When you pass someone in the street say "hello." That super small act of kindness toward another human might be enough to completely change their life. You just never know. And if you change one life, that life has the opportunity to change another and the goodness trickles!

    You’re Always Going to Party

Haha! Nope. There will come a day that you can’t wait to get home from work, slip into your pajamas and crash on the couch with a bag of chips and Netflix. Just the thought of getting dressed up and doing your hair and makeup will exhaust you. I didn’t believe it would ever happen to me. It has. Also, my priorities will change. I'd much rather sit on the floor and play blocks with my son than hang out in a bar or club with friends. Your priorities will change to. You might not think they will, but it'll happen.

You Have All the Time in the World

I definitely used to think this. And now, I look at my little boy and I have no idea where the time went and it makes me so sad because there are lots of things I want to do with him before he goes off to college in 16.5 years. 16 and a half years might seem like a lifetime, but I don't know where the past year and a half went and I'm scared to see how quickly 16 years goes by. None of us are promised a tomorrow so you absolutely shouldn’t use "there's always tomorrow" as an excuse to not do something. Do that something it today- especially if it involves a big trip or move. Do it now before you get married and have kids because while family adventures are awesome, they’re a lot harder when you have to think about people other than yourself.

    Hard Work Always Pays Off

You can work your fingers to the bone- literally- and not be recognized. Or you might be. Either way, you should always, always work hard and do the best that you can because it says a lot about your character. However, life is just as much about hard work as it is about networking and who you know. Connect with as many people as you possibly can. Never, ever stop connecting with people. You'll be amazed where your connections will lead you in life.

    Your Friends Are Forever

Some of the friends you have now will stick by you for the rest of your life, but most of them won’t. And it’s not a bad thing. People change- it’s just the way life goes. But don’t be sad thinking you’re going to be alone and friendless for the rest of your days.  You’ll meet new people along the way and will make new friends. I promise.

    You Don’t Need Sunscreen

My friend’s beautiful and vibrant sister lost her life just before her 24th birthday. Elise died of cancer and attributes it to not wearing sunscreen when she went tanning and laid out in the sun. She left behind her husband, family and friends, but before her death, she did everything she could to try to educate people on the importance of wearing sun screen. Even if you don’t want to slather on sunscreen, just do it. It could save your life.
