Broome County Republicans are saying election day was a good one for them.

Party Chair Bijoy Datta pointed to the victory of Claudia Tenny to take over the Congressional seat being vacated by the retirement of Richard Hanna, the easy win of New York Senator Fred Akshar to a full term over Democrat Sharon Ball and the retention of the Republican majority on the Broome County Legislature.  Democrat Jason Garnar, however, defeated Republican Incumbent Broome County Executive Debra Preston.

In other races, U.S. Senator Charles Schumer gets another term and will likely be the Democratic leader after beating Wendy Long.  However, the Republicans retain control of Congress.

In the 19th Congressional District, Republican John Faso defeated Democrat Zepher Teachout.

In the New York State Assembly, Democrat Donna Lupardo won another term, defeating Republican Dorolo Nixon.

In the Town of Union, Supervisor Rose Sotak has won another term along with fellow Republicans for Trustee, Thomas Augostini and Frank Bertoni Junior.

Apparent winners in the Broome County Legislature are Republicans Scott Baker, Daniel Reynolds, Gregg Baldwin, Matthew Pasquale, Ron Heebner and Michael Sopchak along with Democrats Bob Weslar and Mary Kaminski.

One dead tie at the close of the polls was for Binghamton City Council with incumbent Democrat Jason MacGreygor and Republican Thomas Scanlon even.

Absentee ballots still need to be counted and the vote certified.
