In this episode of Abandoned, we traveled back to the Catskill vicinity, to Cold Springs Hotel in Tannersville NY.  It was called Leopold Beiber’s Cold Springs Hotel. It sits 7,900 feet above sea level. You could get there in four hours from NYC by railroad. If a person wished to go by boat and rail it would take six hours. The hotel served wonderful Hungarian and German food in fine style. For the 1901 season an ad said that it had a fire extinguisher on every floor and boasted of gas fixtures, baths and sanitary plumbing throughout. The view was excellent. They served fresh coffee and cream was gotten from their own cows. The vegetables were taken from the garden on the premises. There was a large dining hall and a special parlor for children. The children had special care given to them. They even had a special cottage for the care of children if needed. Reservations could be made through Leopold Beiber in Tannersville or through S. Feldstein 411 8th Ave, New York City. The hotel opened around 1890, but many additions were put onto the original building over the years until it’s close in the middle 1960’s.

According to the 1918 book, “Prominent Jews in America: A Collection of Biographical Sketches of Jews Who Have Distinguished Themselves in Commercial, Professional and Religious Endeavor,” published by S. B. Goodkind, American Hebrew Publishing Company, Toledo, Ohio, the Cold Spring House was apparently started by Leopold Bieber and his wife Yetta, with Samuel Feldstein, their son-in-law, having married Sadie, one of their daughters, in 1897, coming on board as their manager in 1902.
