As the Fourth of July rapidly approaches, several law enforcement officials and fire agencies are telling area residents to leave the fireworks to the professionals.

The Delaware County Sheriff is among those sending out formal reminders telling residents in the Southern Tier that, while some counties in New York have approved use of sparklers and fountain fireworks, many other counties, including Delaware, Broome and Tioga have not, and fireworks are still illegal.

Even with the change that allows sparkling devices, other types of fireworks, including firecrackers, bottle rockets, Roman candles, spinners and aerial devices remain illegal in all of New York State.

The Fire Association of the State of New York says  a house fire in Washington County recently was caused by recently legalized fireworks and all the devices, even sprinklers can be dangerous. FASNY says the tip of a sparkler burns at a temperature of more than 1,200 degree Fahrenheit and can cause third-degree burns.
