The Southern Tier is marking another somber anniversary.

It was six years ago that Jiverly Wong barricaded himself in the American Civic Association on Front Street in Binghamton and massacred 13 people before committing suicide.

The mass murder happened at around 10:30 a.m. on April 3, 2009 when the then-42 year old Johnson City man went to the ACA, where he had attended English language classes, and opened fire.

Over the past five years, family members and ACA staff have held quiet memorials in front of the building and a park has been developed several yards away at the corner of Front and Clinton Streets.

March 31, the region remembered the murder of Johnson City Police Officer David “DW” Smith Junior, who was gunned down one year ago while on duty, responding to a disturbance call at a medical office building across from Wilson Hospital.
