A woman is in custody for allegedly abandoning 22 dogs and a cat in a condemned building in Endwell.

The dogs were discovered in filth in the basement of the home on Beckwith Avenue on July 8th.

Authorities had to leave the dogs in the hellish conditions one more day as they secured hazardous materials equipment, respirators and the crates needed to transport the dogs and cat out of the house.

Most of the Shih Tzu mixes were covered with fleas and other parasites, some suffered eye and ear infections and some were believed to be deaf or blind

61 year old Gaetana Stamos, who had been a tenant, but now living on North Street in Endicott, was arrested July 21 and charged with 22 counts of failure to provide proper sustenance/cruelty to animals and sent to the Broome County Jail on $3,000 bail.

One of the dogs had to be put down.  The rest have been getting veterinary care at the BC Humane Society in Binghamton.

Stamos has relinquished ownership of the cat and dogs to the Humane Society and the surviving animals are expected to be ready for adoption in the next few weeks as they continue to recover.
