Investigators say the remains found in the Village of Port Dickinson were those of a partially-decomposed female.

A man discovered the remains as he walked along the riverbank Tuesday afternoon.

This afternoon (Thursday) the Broome County Sheriff's Office announced that those remains now have been positively identified as those of 37 year-old Brenda Halpin  from the Town of Chenango who had been listed as missing.  Positive identification was made through fingerprint comparison and analysis.

Authorities say a forensic examination was conducted at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton. They say the cause of death has been ruled "fresh water drowning." The manner of death has not been determined.

The sheriff's office detective division and the state police forensic identification unit are continuing to work on the case. People with information may call 607.778.1911.
