If you're looking for love in the new year, you may be wondering what men actually want in a significant other. If that's the case, here is a compiled list that men say are the top things that they look for in a mate.

  • She's an independent person. In general, it's good not to "need" your partner, and it's healthy if you hobbies that you do without him. If you're too "clingy" then that could be a turn-off for him.
  • She's a smart cookie. I'm not saying you have to have a Master's degree or work for NASA, but you should be able to hold an intelligent conversation, know the world events, and teach him a thing or two every once in a while.
  • You two should be sexually compatible. By that, I mean, you two should be able to communicate about what you like and enjoy. Perhaps that means that right now you don't want to have sex and that you want to wait. Perhaps that means that you want to try new and creative positions. As long as you two are on the same page, it should be okay.
  • He has to find her attractive. Every man has their own taste, so don't think that you have to be a model to find a boyfriend. Just make sure to be yourself, smile as often as you think is fit, and you know, shower every once and a while.
  • She's respectful. I think it's fair to say that everyone wants to be respected. In a relationship, that's no different. It also says a lot about a person by how they treat others as well.
  • She let's him be who he is. No one wants someone else to change them. If you two go to the gym and you want to do yoga while he wants to lift weights, he wants you to understand that.
  • She's not whiny. No man wants to be with a woman who constantly whines about his behavior. Men also say that they don't like a woman who blows up his phone with text messages if he doesn't respond to you right away.
  • She gets along with his friends and family. This is huge! He's not going to want to be with someone who doesn't like the people that he loves. If you meet his parents, make an effort for them to like you, too. His mother's opinion will mean more to him than you think.

Please don't think that I believe that you need to change in order to find someone special this year. Just as men don't want to be changed by their significant other, you shouldn't change for them either.
