Binghamton University is responding to questions and criticisms being widely shared by students in the aftermath of a brutal stabbing on campus April 15.

The University newspaper, the Pipe Dream published an editorial that criticized the speed of response to the murder of Joao Souza at the Windham residence hall, the lack of a lock-down or information about the search for the killer.

The University posted a list of frequently asked questions on its website, binghamton.edu, and said the 45 minutes before alerts were issued was appropriate to have authorities arrive and assess the situation. Police determined no need for a lockdown and some information had to be delayed being released so as to not compromise the investigation.

The engineering program freshman was stabbed multiple times in the dorm at around 10:30 p.m. April 15. Members of several police agencies combed the campus for hours Monday looking for evidence and arrested 20 year old Michael Roque in his own dorm room near the murder scene.  Roque is charged with murder and is being held in the Broome County Jail.

The statement from BU says the Vestal campus is still very safe and historically has shown some of the lowest rates of crime among similar-sized campuses.
