A $20 million residential and commercial complex proposed for Binghamton's West Side has been approved by the city Planning Commission.

Mayor Richard David said the project planned by Newman Development Group for 50 Front Street can now move forward.

The five-story building is to be constructed on the site of the former Sheraton Inn.

Plans call for 10,000-square-feet of commercial space on the ground floor of the structure. The upper floors would have 118 apartments. A below-grade parking garage is planned for the rear of the building.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, David said demolition of the abandoned structure could occur by the end of the year.

Newman Development is acquiring the property from the Broome County Land Bank Corporation.

Up to $3 million in state funding has been authorized for the project.
