Investigators were collecting evidence at a residence on Binghamton's West Side after a person reportedly was found dead.

City police detectives would not discuss the homicide investigation Friday afternoon.

Emergency crews were sent to 23 Oak Street shortly before 1 p.m. An ambulance which had been dispatched was canceled after the deceased person was discovered.

Yellow crime scene tape was used to establish a perimeter around the two-story house, which is believed to have apartments on the first and second floors.

Several detectives were seen conferring outside the residence. Investigators were interviewing people who live in the neighborhood.

A police source familiar with the situation said the victim may have been a female Binghamton University student. City police chief Joseph Zikuski and Binghamton University police chief Timothy Faughnan were not available to comment.

Other university representatives also could not be reached late Friday afternoon.
