A new chief will oversee Binghamton University's police department starting next month.

The selection of John Pelletier was announced on Tuesday. Pelletier, who now is a lieutenant with the police unit, will become chief on December 13.

Pelletier was one of three finalists for the post. The other finalists were university police deputy chief Patrick Reilly and Broome County Sheriff's Office Sergeant Sammy Davis.

An extensive search for a new chief was started several months ago after long-time chief Timothy Faughnan was appointed to the new position of associate vice president for emergency services at the university.

Pelletier joined the Binghamton University police in 2007. He is a retired Army master sergeant who served in Alaska, Panama and North Carolina.

Pelletier also has taught at the Broome County Law Enforcement Academy.
