Smaller thefts from businesses in Broome County amount to more than just nuisances for retailers.  That’s the word from the Broome County District Attorney’s Office.

Steven Cornwell has plans to hold monthly meetings with shop owners to talk about how officials can crack down on petit larcenies and make up about half of the crimes in the County.

Petit larcenies add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars and have been linked to juvenile delinquencies and the County’s on-going issues with drug addiction.

Prosecutors are now also dealing with an adjustment in New York State law that changes the age of responsibility for some crimes committed by youthful offenders.
