A new owner is being sought for a motel that was billed as the Southern Tier's first "all-electric" lodging place when it opened 55 years ago.

The Red Carpet Inn in West Endicott has fallen on hard times in recent years. The 61-room facility at 749 West Main Street was known as the Royal Coachman Motel when it started operations in April 1963.

Advertising for the motel across the street from the En Joie Golf Course described the place as "ultramodern." The property is located just southwest of Charles F. Johnson Elementary School.

Current owner Aleya Majid has faced challenges in operating the Red Carpet Inn lately. She's trying to find someone interested in acquiring the property.

Majid believes there are other potential uses for the old motel. She acknowledges the place will need a significant amount of work.

A sheriff's sale for the property has been scheduled for November 14 to pay off creditors. Majid is hoping someone may come forward before then to buy the property.
