The snowy and icy conditions prompted the Broome County Sheriff's Office to issue a travel advisory.

The notice released by Sheriff David Harder Wednesday afternoon urged motorists to exercise caution because of hazardous driving conditions.

The sheriff advised people to report to work unless they were told otherwise. He encouraged residents to limit travel, if possible.

Those who do choose to drive were urged to leave extra room between vehicles and to have at least a half tank of gas in their vehicle before traveling.

Harder said if you are involved in a crash, stay inside your vehicle and wait for assistance. He urged people not to walk around in the roadway following a crash to avoid being hit by other vehicles.

Local government officials asked vehicle owners to try to park off the street to help crews working to remove snow.
