BU President Announces Efforts to Improve Campus Safety

The president of Binghamton University is promising more action to address safety issues following the violent deaths of two students in the last few weeks.

Harvey Stenger announced a series of steps on Thursday in a letter addressed to "the Campus Community."

Stenger said his staff is reviewing university safety policies and procedures to ensure that everyone "can feel secure."

Stenger said four teams have been established to focus on different priorities: Safety and Security, Counseling/Student Support, Student Engagement and Communications.

The university president said an enhanced notification system will be installed to notify people of an emergency within minutes.

Security cameras will be installed in all residential halls which don't have them. The cameras will be located at main entrances, elevators and in some public areas.

The frequency of peer education training will be increased to give students skills to intervene to prevent possible sexual violence.

In his letter, Stenger said he will make continuous efforts to "ensure our campus is a place where you can feel safe and secure."
