City of Binghamton officials are reminding residents they no longer have to put pink stickers on bulk items that are being thrown out.

Following a trial run last year, the City decided to do away with the bulk collection fee and is picking up most items free of charge.  The City’s blue trash bag and recycling policies remain unchanged.

The new bulk collection rule actually went into effect at the beginning of the year but with the warmer weather and the end of college classes, more large items are making it out to the curb at this time.

Bulk items are those things too big to fit inside a garbage bag and can include furniture, mattresses and lumber.  Items like refrigerators, washers and dryers will be picked up by appointment.  Residents must call the Department of Public Works before they put those items out.  The number to schedule a pickup is (607) 772-7020.  A list of bulk items the City will and will not pick up at the curb can be found at the City’s website: www.cityofbinghamton.com.

As a courtesy to DPW employees, officials ask residents to limit the number of bulk items they throw out to three per week.  Also, plastic shopping bags should be properly recycled at local grocery stores and should not be placed in City recycling bins.
