A long-delayed bridge reconstruction project is about to get underway in Binghamton.

The Exchange Street bridge is expected to be out of service for vehicular traffic for more than five months.

The bridge was to be shut down April 1. Officials say the span over the Susquehanna River, which carries traffic between downtown and the South Side, is expected to reopen in early September.

People will be able to walk across the bridge while the project is underway.

The cost of the reconstruction work will be close to $3 million.

The bridge currently has a 12-ton posted weight limit. Officials say an average of 10,000 vehicles a day cross the span.

A city worker died 45 years ago when the snow sweeper he was operating plunged through a section of deteriorated sidewalk on the bridge.
