First comes love, then comes a mortgage? ...Err, I mean marriage. More and more couples are choosing becoming homeowners before becoming spouses. House Logic found that approximately 25% of couples between the ages of 18 and 34 chose home buying before marriage in 2013.

While perhaps unconventional, there is an apparent trend emerging, so if you and your partner are considering this route, the best thing you can do is make sure that you are covered financially in case anything should happen.

Have an open and honest conversation about money because there should be no surprises when the mortgage payments come due. There are property taxes and insurance costs along with everything, so make sure you know who is in charge of what.

The best thing you can do is talk to an attorney to make sure that in case of a separation or a death that you are safe legally and financially. I'm not saying you will split up, but it's a lot easier to do so without a marriage certificate, so be sure you are covered should that happen.

Otherwise, happy house owning!
