Thousands of cases of canned corn are being recalled because it could cause people to develop a fatal illness.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, Del Monte Foods has taken the action because the corn was under-processed.

The alert indicated more than 64,000 cases of "Fiesta Corn" seasoned with red and green peppers were being recalled. The affected food was in more than two dozen states, including New York and Pennsylvania.

The federal government indicated there had been no reports of illness associated with the product up to this point. Del Monte determined the cans had not been properly sterilized, leading to the risk of spoilage and other problems.

Botulism poisoning is one of the potential issues associated with under-processing of canned foods.

The products subject to recall are 15.25-ounce (432g) cans with the following UPC number printed on the label: 24000 02770. The product will also have one of the following “Best if Used By” dates stamped on the bottom of the can:

  • August 14, 2021
  • August 15, 2021
  • August 16, 2021
  • Sept 3, 2021
  • Sept 4, 2021
  • Sept 5, 2021
  • Sept 6, 2021
  • Sept 22, 2021
  • Sept 23, 2021

People who have the affected cans of corn should return them to where they were purchased for a refund or exchange.
