New York State Electric and Gas says safety is of upmost importance during the cold snap and residents should be vigilant for carbon monoxide.

Vents and chimneys for natural gas heating units and appliances like dryers should be kept free of snow and ice to avoid CO buildup.

Never use a natural gas or propane stove to heat a home or use a grill or portable camping stove indoors.

Keep space heaters away from anything flammable

To save energy costs, set thermostats no higher than 70 and 58 when you aren’t home.

Close vents and doors in unused rooms and close fireplace dampers when not in use.

Close blinds and curtains at night or if the sun isn’t shining to keep warmth in.
