Casinos in New York Line Up for Possible Sports Wagering

According to the Associated Press, the Oneida Indians say, if the state goes along, they will offer sports betting on their central New York land in the wake of a new U.S. Supreme Court decision and a Southern Tier casino owner says he’s also hoping for a quick decision from New York State lawmakers.

The Oneida Indian Nation made the announcement shortly after justices struck down a federal law that largely banned state-authorized sports gambling except in Nevada and Delaware.

The Oneidas say they have been making preparations to offer sports betting at venues on the Oneida reservation in anticipation of the court ruling. They plan to offer sports betting soon.

The Oneidas say the 1993 compact with New York that cleared the way for their Turning Stone casino in Verona allows them offer any game that is permitted in the state.

Tioga Downs Casino and Resort in Nichols is also poised to take advantage should sports betting be allowed in the Empire State.  Owner Jeff Gural says he was involved in filing the legal action in New Jersey to break up Nevada’s monopoly on the wagering option.

The New York State Gaming Commission would have to approve sports betting then set regulations and the processes for permitting the wagering at individual casinos as well as distribution of anticipated revenue.
