Authorities say seven-year-old Connor Brown of Stillwater Road was pronounced dead around 10 p.m. Sunday.

According to the Broome County Sheriff's Office, Connor and his eight-year-old brother Camron Brown had been playing outside. They walked on the ice and Connor fell through.

Connor's mother heard yelling and rushed outside and tried to save the boy. She and Camron also fell through the ice. Neighbors managed to get them out of the water.

Emergency crews were called at 6:19 p.m. Several agencies were dispatched in an effort to find the boy.

Conklin firefighter Nick Platt located Connor in the river and pulled him out.  He was taken to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City, where he died a short time later.

Connor was a second-grade student at Francis P. Donnelly Elementary School. A statement released by Susquehanna Valley Schools said: "Our hearts are broken for the Brown family and their many friends throughout our district and beyond."

The school district is providing grief counselors and social workers to assist students and staff in dealing with the loss of the young boy.
