David Sweat, one of two men given a life without parole sentence after being convicted of murdering Broome County Sheriff's Deputy Kevin Tarsia on July 4, 2002, has escaped from prison. 

New York State Police are searching for Sweat and 48 year-old Richard Matt who were reported missing after a 5:30 a.m. bed check June 6 at the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora.

Sweat, age 34, and Jeffrey A. Nabinger, Jr. were sentenced to life in prison without parole in the murder of Broome County Sheriif's Deputy Kevin Tarsia who encountered the pair along with Shawn J. Devaul who was charged third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a felony.  Tarsia  found the men about 4 a.m. in Grange Park in Kirkwood.  Tarsia was on patrol at the time.

Sweat, who was living in Kirkwood when he committed the murder is a white male, 5' 11" tall and weighs 165 pounds with brown hair and green eyes.  He has tattoos on his left bicep and his right fingers.

Matt is serving a 25 years to life sentence following his conviction in Niagara County for three counts of murder, three counts of kidnapping and two counts of robbery after he kidnapped a victim and caused his death by beating in December, 1997.  Matt is a white male who is 6' tall and weights 210 pounds with black hair and hazel eyes.  He has a "Mexico Forever" tattoo on his back, a heart on his chest and left shoulder and a marine corps insignia on his right shoulder.

State police urge anyone who may see these escapees to immediately contact 911 or the New York State Police.  Do not approach them as they are considered extremely dangerous.
