I recently saw a letter from a concerned parent about his daughter who is getting married and she has a weird request for her guests.

The parent called the request "tacky", but the daughter says a lot of her friends are doing it. The parents are embarrassed to ask their guests to do this but don't know what to do.

I have been part of a lot of weddings in my life and have never heard of this, and I am not really sure I understand why the bride-to-be is doing this so I thought I would ask you about it.

She wants her guests to pay for their meal in lieu of gifts. She says her friends are all doing it and there is nothing wrong with just asking.

I have to say that I don't see the point at all in doing that. Unless, you are a couple who are paying for the wedding yourself and want to make it a little less stressful financially. But, that is not the case in this situation.

What do you think? Is it tacky to ask guests to pay for their meal in lieu of gifts?
