Residents can Shed the Meds June 2 in an effort to keep prescription drugs out of the wrong hands.

United Health Services, Southern Tier AIDS Program, the Johnson City Police, Broome County Sheriff’s Office and New York State Senator Fred Akshar are hosting the collection of unused medications at the parking lot of the Oakdale Mall outside the back entrance to UHS Stay Healthy from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Organizers say getting unused medications out of the home can be a first line of defense in keeping drugs away from children.  They also note prescription drug abuse is known to be a gateway to heroin use and addiction.

During the June 2 collection, residents only have to drive up to dispose of the medications on the spot.

The Southern Tier AIDS Program will provide free Narcan training in the Stay Healthy Conference Room at noon with free Narcan kits offered to attendees.

Residents can register for the training at akshar.nysenate.gov. People not able to drive up to dump their drugs June 2nd can go to a new website to find nearby collection locations at www.ClearYourCabinet.com.
