Several locations October 22 are accepting old and unwanted medications to keep them out of the wrong hands or from polluting the environment.

The Broome County Sheriff’s office is participating in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Justice.

The program collects unwanted, outdated or unused prescription and over the counter medications.

Residents are asked, if possible to empty medications into a zip-top plastic bag and then they can recycle the bottles.

The program is unable to accept syringes or sharps of any kind.

The collection takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the following locations:

Broome County Sheriff’s Office on Lieutenant VanWinkle Drive, Windsor Community House on Main Street, the Johnson City Elks Club near the old IBM Country Club on Watson Boulevard, in the parking lot of Scoops Ice Cream on Route 11 in Whitney Point and at Vestal Fire Station #4 on the Vestal Parkway.

Some locations, like the Sheriff’s Office have permanent collection drop boxes on location for unwanted medications.
