Believe it or not, you can eat (relatively) healthy at any restaurant. Even fast food. Here are some tips and tricks to make that possible for you.

  • Portions matter which I'm sure you already know. Restaurants are notorious for serving patrons portions which are far too large for one meal. Know what a reasonable portion size is, and limit yourself to that.
  • Ask for a box for what is more than a reasonable portion. Box it up right away so that you aren't tempted to over-indulge.
  • Skip the entree altogether and opt for an appetizer with a soup or salad. This will limit the portion size to help you eat less.
  • Location of where you sit is important! A waiter or waitress generally places the appetizer or bread and butter in the middle of the table for everyone to share. Try to position yourself as far away from the middle to avoid mindlessly eating.
  • Read the menu carefully and look for "healthy" words like grilled, steamed, baked, marinated, etcetera. And steer clear of words like creamy, fried, loaded, etcetera.
  • Order more vegetables as your side. Most restaurants offer a starchy side and a vegetable side with an entree. Ask for two vegetables and no starchy side next time to help you eat fewer calories while still feeling full.

What you order and how you order can definitely help you stay within your diet while also being able to enjoy a nice night out with friends or family. It's all possible if you just plan ahead and stick to it!
