Sunrise Terrace residents have raised thousands of dollars to help pay for a project to repair a building that has housed a community center for several decades.

The structure on Terrace Drive was condemned in December because of safety concerns caused by a settling foundation.

Sunrise Terrace Association treasurer Kathy Groover said $9,465 has been raised in cash contributions and pledges, along with a business donation.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Groover said association representatives will continue to approach businesses for assistance.

Groover said the association also is seeking support from service clubs and foundations. She noted that although the building is located in the Sunrise Terrace neighborhood in the town of Dickinson, the facility is about the entire community.

The association is developing a plan to make the repairs needed to reopen the building. An engineer had estimated that work could cost at least $80,000.

Groover said the organization intends to put out a request for proposals from construction businesses to get a more solid projection for what the needed work will cost.

Groover said people who wish to donate to the community center project may send a check to the Town of Dickinson offices with a notation that it's to be used by the Sunrise Terrace Association.
