FAMILY WANTED: For JC Habitat for Humanity Home

A new Habitat for Humanity home in Johnson City is ready to be occupied as the organization seeks the right family.

Major construction work on the house at the corner of Willow Street and Floral Avenue was recently completed.

Amy Winans, executive director of Broome County Habitat for Humanity, said the organization has yet to secure a family to live in the home.

The house is next to another Habitat for Humanity home that was built earlier and is occupied.

Winans said there's been "great frustration" that the organization has not been receiving applicants for the newest home.

The biggest factor in finding a family for the house may be the fact that it is directly across the street from the scene of a deadly fire in an apartment building. The fire-damaged structure continues to be an eyesore but renovation work on the property is getting underway.

Winans is encouraging families interested in applying for the new four-bedroom house to seek information at the Habitat for Humanity website.

Those who are selected for Habitat for Humanity houses must agree to provide "sweat equity" by working on future projects for the organization.
