The last Purge film was The First Purge but the next Purge will be the last Purge.

Everybody got that?

I will clarify: Per James DeMonaco (via Entertainment Weekly), the man who created The Purge in the first place, he has an idea he really likes that will wrap his The Purge film series with its next installment, which will be the fifth. (There is also a Purge television series on USA.)

“I have it in my head. I think I’m going to write it. I think it’s a great way to end it all. We want to end it all, I think, in this one, and I’m very excited. When I came up with the idea and pitched it to everybody, they seemed psyched, and I think it will be a really cool ending, how we take this one home.”

“Hear me out, guys: In this one, all crime is legal for 24 hours.”

I kid, I kid. Frankly, I’m surprised DeMonaco is ready to wrap up The Purge after just five films and the TV series. The First Purge (which, again, was the last one but not the next one, which will be the last) was the biggest worldwide hit in the franchise’s history, so it’s not like the audience is starting to lose interest. And if anything the material is even more timely and relevant than when it was first introduced in 2013.

Maybe this will be the last film and The Purge’s focus will shift to television for the foreseeable future. Or DeMonaco will call this one The Final Purge but then make a sixth film anyway. Here’s an idea: How about a spinoff franchise about a world where, for one night a year, all reboots are legal?
