Firefighters raced to a Binghamton apartment building after receiving a report a blind resident was trapped inside a burning third-floor unit.

The blaze in the large structure at 164 Chapin Street was reported at 1 p.m. Thursday.

Authorities say firefighters searched the apartment where the fire originated and did not find the woman who was feared to have been inside.

The raging blaze damaged the apartment's kitchen and dining area. It did not spread to adjacent units.

Assistant fire chief Samuel Santoni said flames were shooting from a window on the west side of the building when firefighters arrived.

[UPDATE: More than two hours after the fire was extinguished, investigators and building management had been unable to locate the woman who lives in the apartment where the fire occurred.]

Sections of North Street and Chapin Street near the fire scene were closed for over an hour.

County property records identify the property owner as BL Chapin 113 LLC. Signs in the entrances of the apartment complex advise residents that an ownership and management change took effect on July 13.

The notices indicate the management company now in charge is Empire Property Management. A call to the firm's Binghamton office was not immediately returned.
