The Firefighters Association of the State of New York is reacting to the quick drop in temperatures that they say is a “swift end to ‘Hotumn’” by issuing a safety statement.

FASNY reminds residents to never leave a space heater unattended, make sure fireplaces and furnaces are properly maintained and to check home smoke alarms at least monthly.

The National Fire Protection Association says there is historically an elevated risk of dying from fire during the winter season.  December, January and February are generally the deadliest months.

Residents are also urged to have carbon monoxide alarms to detect the deadly gas that can come from gas fireplaces or other gas appliances.
