New York State Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has awarded the state's highest military honor for heroism to a Lindenhurst Army National Guard staff sergeant, who while in her pajamas ran to help two teenagers shot late last year outside her previous home in Syracuse.

According to an article on Newsday.com, Staff Sgt. Marlana Watson, a Binghamton native, and a medic during a yearlong deployment to Afghanistan that ended in 2013, was headed to bed on November 5th when gunfire erupted in the street. She was living in Syracuse at the time.

She had her sister call 911 while she ran to help two teenagers who were shot. She said she went back inside after police arrived and thought so little of her contribution that she did not report it to her Guard chain of command.

Your military training just kicks in. You just do what you're trained to do.

Looking back, she realized how dangerous the situation was. Helping them out and wondering if the shooter was going to return to finish the job. Watson said, "I said to myself, 'I make it back from Afghanistan, and then get shot in Syracuse.'"

Thank you Staff Sgt. Marlana Watson for being a true HERO!
