When we're feeling down and out, we usually grab for macaroni and cheese, pizza, ice cream, alcohol, or anything else that we think will make us feel better. This is of course, after we have diligently been cutting carbs and sugars from our diet, so this sudden influx of all of that makes our bodies hurt and writhe in pain from too much of a "good thing". Brit.co has compiled a list of foods that you should eat that are good for you and that make you feel happier.

  • Cacao which, unfortunately is not the same as chocolate. In order to get all the benefits of cacao, it has to be in its' raw form. So instead of a chocolate bar, opt for cacao nibs instead.
  • Black sesame seeds are high in zinc and have been shown to help relax the nervous system and strengthen the kidneys. They can be added on top of most other foods, like salads, for a nice crunch.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids are notorious for being a mood booster. Having some salmon at lunch or adding walnuts to your meal may just be what your body needs to make it through to the end of the day.
  • Chickpeas has vitamin B-6 and magnesium which help to fight depression and supports a healthy dopamine level in the body. Add chickpeas to a soup, or nosh on some carrots and hummus!

It's neat to think that one of the easiest ways to feel better may be hiding in your kitchen!
