Have you ever found yourself in the kitchen opening the refrigerator, finding nothing that sparks your taste buds, but then returning a few minutes later hoping that something that you're craving had magically appeared? You're not alone. Cooking Light has given some insight into what your body is really craving when you think you want fattening and sugary foods.

  • If you're craving something carb-heavy it may be because your energy level has fallen. Your body wants anything that can bring its' energy back up, but what you really need is whole grains and foods that are rich in fiber.
  • If you're craving something sweet opt for fruit instead of foods with added sugar like snack cakes or something else that lacks any sort of nutrition. The average person has 22 teaspoons of added sugar every day. There's no need to consume any more.
  • If you're craving something salty then odds are that you are stressed out! Find a way to relax instead of giving in to this kind of craving. Your waistline will thank you!

On top of stress and boredom, there are other reasons for cravings... like a lack of sleep! Try to solve the real reason for your food cravings before giving in to them.
