Law enforcement agencies on both sides of the border in the Twin Tiers are bumping up patrols through the Fourth of July holiday weekend looking for drunk and dangerous drivers.

The yearly DWI crackdown involving checkpoints in addition to the increased patrols continues through Tuesday, July 5.

Authorities say the Independence Day holiday weekend is typically one of the deadliest of the year when it comes to drunk driving crashes.

On another safety note, the Firefights Association of the State of New York urges New Yorkers to leave the fireworks to the professionals.

FASNY President Robert McConville says “There is a reason that fireworks displays and shows are regulated in the State of New York” as fireworks are extremely dangerous and can cause serious injury or even death if not properly handled by a professional.
