The Southern Tier Homeless Coalition and Binghamton University have recently joined in a partnership to educate the general community and college population about homeless and hunger issues.

Speaking on the December 3 edition of the weekly local public affairs program, Southern Tier Close Up, associate professor of social work at Binghamton University, Homeless Coalition spokeswoman Rebecca Rathmell and B.U. graduate student, Michael Cole talk about an education event on campus November 18 that drew dozens of people, the perception of homelessness and the desire of the campus community to learn more and help.

Rathmell also touched on the recent, successful initiative to end veteran homelessness in the Binghamton area.

She says there is the hope that continued education can help prevent future homelessness and food challenges.

The unexpected face of homelessness, including a growing number of families is also discussed.

Southern Tier Close Up can be heard Sunday at 6am on Wild 104.
