If one of your New Year's resolutions was to try to drink more water, how much do you think you actually need to be hydrated? Bustle came up with the answer, and it might surprise you!

The usual thought is that you need to drink eight glasses of water a day, right? Well, according to ScienceDaily, a study in 2016 found that many people were drinking too much water if they drank those eight glasses of water a day.

Looking at where that drink marker came from, it seemed like a general guideline to make sure that you were aware of how much you were drinking, not a true and tried rule that you had to strictly follow.

The actual amount of water that you need everyday depends on you. What your lifestyle is like, what your body is like, and what your personal needs may be. An active runner will need more than eight glasses a day, but a sedentary office worker might need less!

Signs of thirst include headaches, exhaustion, dark colored urine, dry eyes and feeling hungry, among other things. Drink when you're thirsty, drink while you eat, and you should generally be okay. It might be more than eight glasses each day, and it might be less!
