I have a lot of pretty amazing memories of winter in Upstate New York as a kid, but there are a few that stand out more than others.

There was the winter that my brother, Brian had pneumonia for almost the whole winter and he couldn’t go out and play in the snow and was heartbroken, so my mom dressed him in a snowsuit, hat, gloves, scarf, the whole 9 yards and she carted in buckets of snow and popped Brian, and the snow, in the bathtub so that Brian wouldn’t be so sad about not being able to play in it.

Another one of my memories is when we’d make snow ice cream. My mom hasn’t really ever been one to follow recipes, so it took a bunch of trial and error runs (including the time she added in raw egg- ick!) before she nailed down a recipe that we all loved.

I decided since we’ve got so much snow that I would make snow ice cream with my little boy- the same way we used to make it when I was a kid and it was a huge hit!

Taylor Family Snow Ice Cream

8 cups of snow
1 cup of milk
1/3 cup sugar
2 tsp maple syrup
Pinch of salt

Whisk together milk, sugar, syrup and salt. Once blended, add in snow, and whisk well.
