If you want to escape from a chaotic and family-filled house for a few hours on Christmas day, you have slim pickings of places that will remain open. One of the few places open on Christmas Day are movie theaters!

Although you will not be able to go out and see “The Interview”, starring James Franco and Seth Rogen, there are plenty of other movies to see, ranging from inspiring true stories to fictional fairy tales.

Movies such as “Unbroken”, “Big Eyes”, and “Wild” are all based on real events and real people and will be out on Christmas Day!

“Unbroken”, starring Jack O’Connell and directed by Angelina Jolie, is a film that follows the life of Louis Zamperini, a war hero and Olympian. Louis Zamperini, the star of the film, is actually somewhat local. He was born in Olean, New York, which is about a three hour drive west from Binghamton on I-81.

“Big Eyes”, starring Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz, is a film about the painter Margaret Keane and her husband who took credit for her art work in the 1960s. This film directed by Tim Burton shows the inspiring true story of one woman’s legal battle against her husband to gain credit that was rightfully hers.

“Wild”, starring Reese Witherspoon, is a Golden Globe nominated film following one woman’s 1,100 mile solo journey on the Pacific Crest Trail. The film shows Cheryl Strayed, portrayed by Witherspoon, on her hike alone and “powerfully captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddens, strengthens, and ultimately heals her.
