Until relatively recently, left-handed people were stigmatized. I know this because my grandmother was forced to write with her right hand in school despite being left-handed. I, myself, am left-handed like her!

Psychologists in the past have believed that being left-handed was an evolutionary weakness, but that's proven not to be the case. Actually, it's being discovered that being left-handed might be the better way! Here are some interesting facts about left-handed people.

  • They may be quicker thinkers. Lefties may be able to use both sides of their brains more easily and efficiently than righties.
  • Lefties have the upper hand in some sports. While fifteen percent of the general population is left-handed, more than 25 percent of Major League Baseball Players are.
  • Their brains organize emotion differently. In a left-hander's brain, motivation was associated with greater activity in the right hemisphere of the brain, while the opposite was true of a right-hander's.
  • Lefties may be more creative thinkers. Some research has found that lefties are better at divergent thinking (the ability to think of many solutions to a single problem), a cognitive hallmark of creativity.

So, being left-handed is amazing, and should not be stigmatized. In fact, you might wish that you were one like me!
