Liam Payne -- the final remaining member of One Direction whose plans for the future were seemingly nonexistent as recently as June -- has signed a solo deal with Capitol Records. This renders One Direction's hiatus more indefinite than ever!

Liam tweeted the news earlier today (July 21), then followed his initial announcement up with a statement about his vague forever-devotion to his former brothers: "One Direction will always be my home and family but I'm very excited to see what this chapter brings."

News of Liam trying to secure some sort of a future in entertainment for himself shouldn't come as much of a surprise to fans (though, judging by Twitter reactions, it certainly did).

Harry Styles has already moved on to acting, as he's currently shooting the Christopher Nolan World War II drama DunkirkHe also signed a solo deal with Columbia Records late last month, and joined the roster of Full Stop Management, created by the former head of CAA Jeff Azoff  -- so Harry's been planning his exit strategy for a while now.

Tumbling golf caddy Niall Horan, meanwhile, is in the midst of negotiating a deal with Simon Cowell’s Syco label, and will reportedly be managed by Modest, the same team that dealt with 1D.

New dad Louis Tomlinson decided against a solo career (brave though that would have been) and plans to work in television instead. He appeared on last night's (July 20) episode of America's Got Talent as a guest judge, so he's at least making his television dreams come true.

It was only natural, then, that the most vocally capable member of One Direction (as well as one of its most musically-inclined, judging by his Big Payno remixes of 1D's own songs) find something to do outside of his relationship with Cheryl Fernandez-Versini.

Sadly, fans seem to have clung to Liam as their sole beacon of hope for One Direction's eventual return. Now they've voiced their devastation on Twitter, getting the hashtag #OneDirectionIsOverParty trending worldwide. The power of 1D stans remains strong as ever.
