Lil Wayne Discusses Competitive Spirit, Kanye West & Hot Boys Days in CRWN Interview — Part 1 [VIDEO]

Lil Wayne is the newest artist to sit in the CRWN hot seat. After interviewing artists like Drake, J. Cole and Macklemore, journalist Elliott Wilson talks to Weezy at SXSW in Austin, Texas for his CRWN live interview series.

In the first part of the 90-minute interview, the Grammy Award-winning rapper discusses his forthcoming ‘Tha Carter V’ album. “I’m approaching it like it is my last project — I think that’s why it’s a lot different than anything else,” he said. “The grind is different — I’m approaching it as if you don’t have tomorrow.”

The New Orleans native admitted that he lets Cortez Bryant, one of the leaders of Young Money Entertainment and founder of the Blueprint Group, lead the way in choosing the singles that will be released from the project. A simple text message from Bryant to Wayne is all he needs to know what direction they’re going in.

The lauded MC also shared his love for Kanye West and the artistic risks he took on the ‘Yeezus’ tour. “When he came out with the mask, I was like, ‘This n—- crazy,’ so then two songs go by, ‘This n—- crazy, he still got that mask on.’ Then three, four, five songs go by, go into intermission and s—, that changed the mask, like, ‘That ain’t no motherf—in’ Kayne out there, that n—- taller and everything.’ That’s crazy as hell,” he laughed and lamented that he could never pull off a stunt like that.

There was even talk about why he no longer says he’s the “best rapper alive.” Wayne’s not trying to “outshine” his own “awesome” artists. The rhymer explains that he wants artists signed to his Young Money roster — like Drake and Nicki Minaj — to be “better than me.” “It’s about them and it’s about us,” the 31-year-old entertainer states.

Drake’s appeal to the people, Kendrick Lamar‘s ‘Control’ verse, the Hot Boys experience and more are all a part of the conversation.

The second portion of the interview will be released tomorrow.
