The Southern Tier Chapter of the American Red Cross is calling on area residents to step forward to help the victims of flooding in Louisiana as more local volunteers have been sent south to help.

The Red Cross says the situation is still critical and donations coming in are not enough to cover the costs of sheltering and offering other aid.

Financial contributions can go to distributing meals, relief items, shelter, health services and paying for the deployment of dozens of disaster relief vehicles.

People can donate by visiting redcross.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS or texting LAFLOODS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.

Some of the latest volunteers from the Southern Tier sent to the disaster area are Greg Patinka of Binghamton, David Ruston of Binghamton and Dianne Zavada of Vestal.
