I don't know about you, but if I went to the doctor with a slew of strange symptoms and he told me that the problem was that I was brewing alcohol in my stomach, I'd laugh in his face. But for one guy, it was a very true reality.

An unnamed man staggered into an emergency room complaining that he was dizzy. Doctors discovered that the man's blood alcohol level was 0.37% or almost five times the legal limit for driving.  The guy swore up and down that it was impossible because he hadn't even touched a drop of alcohol.

The man went on to tell the doctors that sometimes he got drunk out of the blue. As you can imagine, the doctors were like “yeah, okay- this guy is a closet drinker and full of excuses." But, there was one doctor who actually believed the guy and who was determined to find out what was really happening.

So the doctor, a gastroenterologist named Just McCarthy has the man isolated in a hospital room for 24 hours. Throughout the day, the guy was given that were loaded with carbs. His blood was checked here and there for elevated alcohol levels, and at one point, it rose 0.12%.

It turns out that the guy has an overabundance of brewer’s yeast in his gut and doctors are calling it “auto-brewery syndrome.”  Whenever the man eats or drinks a lot of starch, the yeast in his belly ferments the sugars into ethanol, and he gets drunk.
