Binghamton police are investigating a shooting that occurred while a man sat in a car parked on a downtown street on Easter Sunday.

Authorities say 40-year-old Grady Hunter of Binghamton was shot several times just before noon by a gunman who was on foot.

Investigators say the car was parked near the Yellow Deli at 121 Susquehanna Street.

People who were nearby at the time said they heard four or five gunshots in rapid succession.

After the shooting, Hunter reportedly was taken by a private vehicle to Lourdes Hospital on Riverside Drive on the city's West Side.

Detectives say Hunter sustained life-threatening injuries. He was hospitalized in critical condition.

Neighbors who were in the area at the time reported hearing about five gunshots.

Police say the shooter was described as a black man who was wearing a black hoodie, black athletic pants and black footwear.

The shooting happened about five hours after three people were shot on Crocker Avenue in Johnson City. A Binghamton woman who was shot in that incident died.

Investigators have not said whether they believe the shootings are linked to each other.
