Men Need to Be More Honest With Their Doctor

Doctor
Traci Taylor

There’s not much that my husband and I disagree on, but there is one huge thing- visiting the doctor.

My husband never goes to the doctor. Like ever. Like in all the years I’ve known him, he’s only been three or four times. And I happen to know that he’s been sick a lot more than three or four times. My husband detests going to the doctor because he is worried if he goes in for one thing, they’ll find a slew of other things. I tell him I’d rather pay off medical bills for the rest of forever than to have to pay for a funeral because he’s too stubborn to go to the doctor.

The last time my husband went to the doctor, I practically had to drag him into the walk in clinic because all night he’d been moaning and curled up in the fetal position, experiencing ear pain. I went with him and he just sat on the exam table acting like nothing was going on. I pushed him to reveal more about what was happening and the doctor was able to take a second look and see that he really did have a serious problem.

Looks like my man isn’t the only one not really explaining things to the doctor because a new study has found that some guys tend to downplay their symptoms when seeing a male doctor and that could end up making their health worse.

The reason this is such a big deal is because men are already less likely than women to  visit a doctor and when they do, they tend to ask for a male doctor because that’s the more ‘manly’ thing to do.

What’s happening is that when guys actually go to the doctor, they don’t revel the truth about their health because they try to come off as tough guys and by not telling the whole truth, the doctor doesn’t know that there might be an even bigger problem which can mean a dangerous outcome.
